Vote OBK! Golden Tap Awards 2013

Is there something in the beer scene in Ontario – whether it be a person, a brewery, an event, a beer, anything – that you believe deserves special recognition by the Golden Tap Awards?

OntarioBeerKegs:

We feel we have broken barriers for accessibility of equipment and ingredients and set a new standard for support for brewing and customer service!

  • Improving the future of Ontario’s craft beer scene by making it affordable for new brewers to get their start and begin experimenting at the home level. Which is where it all starts for eventual professional brewers
  • Large support for homebrewing competitions and events to encourage growth in the Ontario (and Canadian) brewing communities
  • Craft Brewing exposure from collaboration with Broadhead Brewery for a one-off Pro-Am seasonal

Just think several years from now, how many pro brewers will have started on an OBK brew pot! (they are already out there!) We believe this deserves special recognition for the beer scene in Ontario.

Toronto Beer Week Music & ProAm Beer Night – August 4th, 2013

Toronto Beer Week is a weeklong celebration of craft beer in Ontario, taking place every September at breweries, bars and venues across the city. Now in our 4th year, we are hosting a special event on August 4th at 3030 Dundas West to unite our two favourite communities – beer drinkers and music lovers.

At TBW we recognize the craft movement often starts in basements and garages, which is why we host an annual homebrew competition. Held this past June, we received 200 entries from across Ontario. Some of our previous contestants have moved on to brew professionally or open their own breweries.

This DIY spirit is an obvious parallel to Toronto’s Indie Music scene, where many of our favorite artists grew up playing in their garages before breaking out into the international scene. This is why we are hosting our ProAm Beer and Music Night as a warm up to TBW. There will samples of our homebrewed collaborations, dozens of craft beer on tap, local indie music.

Beer Collabs:
Great Lakes Brewery & Norm McCabe
Black Oak Brewery & John Henley
5 Paddles Brewing & Durham Homebrewers Club
…plus dozens of craft beers on tap!

Fire up those kettles. Toronto Beer Week 2013 Homebrew Competition Announcement!

Posted on March 19, 2013 by Gabriel Nijmeh

We are happy to announce details of this year’s Toronto Beer Week 2013 homebrew competition. Based on feedback we received, we have made some changes that will make this year’s competition the best one yet!

TBW values the contribution that homebrewers make to the Toronto beer scene. TBW also seeks to encourage collaboration among the homebrewing community and Ontario craft brewers as some winning beers will be selected by participating breweries to be brewed up as a pilot or a production beer and served during Toronto Beer Week. In order to have some of the winning beers in production and ready to be served during TBW, judging will have to be completed several weeks prior to TBW.

Here are a few key details you need to know as you plan the beers you wish to enter this year:
Registration will open on Wednesday May 1st, 2013 and the deadline to ship/drop-off your entries will be Saturday June 1st, 2013 by 6pm. Shipping/drop-off location is to be confirmed shortly.

Pro Beer Makers Stay Sharp by Crafting with Amateurs

“Repeating the same recipe day in, day out can dampen a beermaker’s enthusiasm. So can scrubbing stainless steel and poring over profit-and-loss statements.

What does a professional brewer do to rekindle his passion? One solution: Invite a couple of home-brewers over to help make something new.”
